So January’s been and gone in a hot humid haze! But I suppose that’s why we love Townsville—to get through the heat by sipping cold drinks in the shade enjoying the lazy afternoons.
Any one who knows Townsville will know that the trek up Castle Hill, that sits smack in the middle of town, is a regular daily pilgrimage for many. I have wanted to capture its beauty for some time as I day dream in colour on my regular walks. At sunrise and sunset the colours are absolutely spectacular! I found time during the hot January days to finally get the design out of my head and into the wool.
I took some photos of the process I go through whilst preparing these patterns to share with you!
Firstly I start with a fine piece of natural silk to lay the wool on—(This is so the natural fibres of the wool bind to the natural fibres of the silk). Basic pattern outlines are created by carefully pulling apart the wool, and then layers upon layers are applied to build up the scene. Once I am happy with the layout of the wool I begin the felting process. This involves using hot soapy water and rubbing the wool quite hard until its bound to the silk. Lucky it’s such a physical process—saves on gym membership!
If you’re wanting to learn more about this process we’ve got plenty of “How To” DVDs in store or we are happy to post it to you!
People often ask “Why Felt?” and I’ve pondered what it is exactly that has drawn me to this medium. I feel that this ancient technique of felting is not only a unique medium for my fashion design/interior design, but the process also allows me endless boundaries to explore my creativity. Felting allows to be inspired by the natural beauty surrounding us and not a pre-determined fashion trend! This is what makes my work so enjoyable, and hopefully brings beauty and happiness all of my wonderful customers!
